Our painting is a first idea for the "Christ on the Cross" known as "Christ between the two thieves" or "The Calvary" kept at the Musée de La Cohue in Vannes. This work, presented at the Salon of 1835, unleashed criticism. It astonishes by its composition, its color and its violent chiaroscuro. The MP Vigier obtained that the painting be attributed to Morbihan, the department he represented. The work was initially exhibited at the Saint Patern church in Vannes, then restored in 1864 for the retrospective exhibition dedicated to the artist the day after his death in Paris. It was included in the inventory of the Vannes Museum of Fine Arts in 1865 where the painting is now exhibited. Eugène Delacroix died on August 13, 1863. On February 17/18/19, 1864, the studio sale took place at the Hôtel Drouot. A red wax seal with the initials was affixed to the back of the works.
